In the world of One Piece, there is an important power called “Conqueror’s Haki”(AKA Haoshoku Haki) that is only allowed to be possessed by a limited number of strong individuals.

In this article, we will introduce a list of characters who possess Conqueror’s Haki and provide explanations for each of them. Additionally, we will also provide some analysis.

This article contains spoilers up to the latest chapter of One Piece. Please proceed with caution.

What is Conqueror’s Haki?

The “Conqueror’s Haki” is a rare power that only one in millions possess the potential for, unlike the other two types of Haki, “Armament” and “Observation”. Those who possess it are said to have the “qualities of a king” and can intimidate and even cause enemies to faint by using this ability. Unlike the other two types of Haki, Conqueror’s Haki cannot be trained through practice but only through personal growth.

Although Conqueror’s Haki is a special power that only a few in millions can obtain, many prominent figures in the New World are able to wield it with great skill. Characters such as the “Four Emperors” and the “Worst Generation” rookies, who are known for their strength and charisma, use this power, and even the main character, Luffy, has acquired Conqueror’s Haki.

In the following list, we will introduce the characters who can use Conqueror’s Haki.

  • Monkey D. Luffy
  • Roronoa Zoro
  • Portgas D. Ace
  • Shanks
  • Silvers Rayleigh
  • Whitebeard/Edward Newgate
  • Don Quixote Doflamingo
  • Charlotte Katakuri
  • Boa Hancock
  • Chinjao
  • Big Mom/Charlotte Linlin
  • Eustass Kidd
  • Kozuki Oden
  • Gol D. Roger
  • Sengoku
  • Douglas Barrett
  • Kaido
  • Yamato

1. Monkey D. Luffy

The protagonist of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy, begins to unconsciously use Haoshoku Haki midway through the story. After experiencing the Sabaody Archipelago arc, where the Straw Hat Pirates are in a pinch, and the Summit War arc, where he realizes his own powerlessness for not being able to save his brother, Luffy starts to seriously train his haki.

The one who taught Luffy how to use Haki was Rayleigh, the vice-captain of the Roger Pirates. Rayleigh is a Haki master who can use all three types of haki – Busoshoku Haki, Kenbunshoku Haki, and Haoshoku Haki. He became Luffy’s mentor, possibly because he felt something similar to what Roger felt in Luffy.

After completing his training, Luffy becomes able to freely use Haoshoku Haki and can even fight against powerful enemies who also use the same haki. In the Fishman Island arc, he displayed his Haoshoku Haki by making 50,000 enemies faint at once. It can be said that he has grown significantly as a human being.

The clash between Luffy and Katakuri’s Haoshoku Haki was also intense. Katakuri is the No.2 of the Four Emperors, Big Mom, and his strength proved to be a difficult challenge for Luffy. However, as the fight progressed, the two of them became evenly matched.

At the end of their fight, Luffy and Katakuri clashed their Haoshoku Haki simultaneously, causing nearby pirates to be unable to stand up.

2. Roronoa Zoro

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

One of the combatants of the Straw Hat Pirates, Roronoa Zoro, aims to become the world’s greatest swordsman and acts as Luffy’s right-hand man. During the Wano Country arc, he also revealed the ability to use Haoshoku Haki.

In chapter 1010 of the original manga, Luffy is in a desperate situation after receiving a powerful attack from Kaido. However, Zoro shouts, “Shall I crush this guy’s head first?” to Kaido. Kaido then feels Zoro’s Haoshoku Haki after receiving Zoro’s powerful attack, “Oni Giri Kyūtōryū Ashura Bakuretsu – Mōjagari”.

There are many scenes in which Luffy and Zoro, as well as Roger and Rayleigh, are depicted as complementary pairs. Like Rayleigh, Zoro also finally awakened his Haoshoku Haki. This can also be said to qualify Zoro as the right-hand man of the Pirate King.

3. Portgas D. Ace

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Ace, the son of the Pirate King and the strongest member of the Whitebeard Pirates. He grew up resenting being the son of the Pirate King, but it seems that his bloodline was strong as he was able to manifest the power of Haoshoku Haki when Luffy was in danger during their childhood.

During the Marineford Arc, which was triggered by Ace’s execution by the Navy, the Whitebeard Pirates and their allies came to rescue Ace. Ace was a charismatic figure who drew people to him. Unfortunately, he lost his life in the battle. There weren’t many scenes of him using Haoshoku Haki in this arc.

4. Shanks

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Shanks is the great pirate who is counted as one of the Four Emperors and the benefactor of the protagonist Luffy. Although he has not played a big role in the story yet, he is an important figure for Luffy’s goal.

On board the Whitebeard Pirates’ ship, Shanks demonstrated his use of Haoshoku Haki. As soon as he boarded the ship, many of the crew members lost consciousness one after another.

Moreover, Shanks had a relaxed expression. The pinnacle was reached when negotiations with Whitebeard broke down and the two sides clashed swords, creating a gap in the thick clouds due to the intense collision of their Haoshoku Haki.

When the Haoshoku Haki of two Emperors clash, it produces such a strong impact that it can even change the sky.

5. Silvers Rayleigh

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Rayleigh is a living legend, with a career as a member of the Pirate King’s crew. He is currently working as a ship coating artisan at the Sabaody Archipelago.

He is a reckless person who, when he loses his money in gambling, kidnaps people to steal their money. At a slave auction, he made a large number of spectators faint with his Haoshoku Haki.

After that, he became Luffy’s mentor and taught him how to use Haki. He is also a first-rate practitioner of Armament and Observation Haki, capable of defeating ferocious beasts without even touching them, surpassing Luffy’s abilities by hundreds of times.

Even after Luffy finished his training, he still looks up to Rayleigh as the embodiment of Haki mastery. It is amazing to think that Rayleigh, who is not even a captain, can use Haoshoku Haki. The Roger Pirates must have been a group of formidable individuals.

6. Whitebeard/Edward Newgate

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Whitebeard was a man who boasted the most legendary strength among the Four Emperors. The Whitebeard Pirates are a large group composed of 16 divisions and have 43 pirate crews under their command.

He was a formidable opponent who could hold his own against Pirate King Roger during his time, but due to his age, he was always hooked up to an IV.

He appeared at Marineford to counter Ace’s execution and demonstrated his full strength. Whitebeard has the strongest ability among the Paramecia Devil Fruits, the Tremor-Tremor Fruit.

Not only his abilities are strong, but he is also a first-rate user of Haki, capable of delivering powerful punches to the Logia Devil Fruit user, Akainu.

Unfortunately, he lost his life during the Summit War, but he was truly a “King of the Pirates” with his pride and the trust of his comrades.

7. Don Quixote Doflamingo

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Doflamingo, who used to be one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, ruled over Dressrosa. Despite being born into a World Noble family, he ended up living in the lower world due to his father’s beliefs.

There, he gradually began to display the qualities of an evil ruler as he received cruel treatment from people who held grudges against the Celestial Dragons. Eventually, he rose to become the king of Dressrosa.

Doflamingo engaged in a fierce battle with Luffy in Dressrosa. When Doflamingo attempted to crush Law, Luffy used his foot to stop him, resulting in a clash of intense Conqueror’s Haki between them.

This scene of Haki collision will surely be remembered as a legendary moment for years to come.

8. Charlotte Katakuri

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Katakuri is the second-in-command of the Big Mom Pirates, a crew consisting only of his own family members, and one of the Four Emperors. He is highly respected and admired by his siblings and is known to have trained extensively in Haki, including not only Conqueror’s Haki but also Observation Haki and Armament Haki. His Observation Haki is especially advanced, allowing him to see several seconds into the future.

Katakuri possesses the “Mochi Mochi no Mi” Devil Fruit power, which is considered to be a superior version of Luffy’s “Gomu Gomu no Mi” ability. Although Luffy struggles against Katakuri’s superior skills, he gains insight during their fight and begins to see several seconds into the future himself. The two combatants exchange dialogue about the future thanks to their Observation Haki and ultimately settle their score.

While the clash of Conqueror’s Haki between Katakuri and Luffy did not have as significant an impact as the one between Whitebeard and Shanks, it still created a palpable sense of tension and excitement during their battle.

9. Boa Hancock

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Hancock is a former member of the Seven Warlords of the Sea and the Empress of the Amazon Lily, a nation that rules over the island of women. She is known as the “Pirate Empress” and is a powerful fighter, so much so that even the former Navy admiral Sengoku said “That woman is strong” about her.

She appears towards the end of the first half of the Grand Line, when the concept of Haki is introduced. Upon seeing Luffy unconsciously using his Conqueror’s Haki, she declares that she can also use the same “Haki” as him. This reveals that Hancock is also capable of using Conqueror’s Haki.

In actual combat, she excels in using her “Mero Mero no Mi” power to petrify opponents and in hand-to-hand combat. She has also mastered the use of Armament Haki, allowing her to physically strike Logia-type Devil Fruit users.

During the Marineford War, she showed her strength by holding off Smoker to protect Luffy.

10. Chinjao

Chinjao is the 12th leader of the Happo Navy, who appeared in the Dressrosa arc. He is now retired as a pirate, but participated in a fighting tournament with his sons, which involved the Mera Mera no Mi.

He is of the same generation as famous pirates such as Roger and Whitebeard, and can also use Haoshoku Haki. In the tournament, he used this power to knock out many formidable participants.

His main fighting style is a martial art called Hasshoken, which he enhances with Armament Haki. He was once known as “Chinjao the Drill” for using his pointed head in his headbutts.

However, in a fight with Luffy’s grandfather Garp, his head was flattened and his combat power decreased. He held a grudge against Luffy because of this, but after Luffy’s punch fixed his head, they reconciled.

After fighting alongside Luffy and sensing the growth of his son Sai, Chinjao decided to retire completely from piracy.

11. Big Mom/Charlotte Linlin

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

One of the Four Emperors who rule the seas in the latter half of the Grand Line, Big Mom. Her real name is “Charlotte Linlin,” but she is called Big Mom because she has a large family consisting of 43 husbands, 46 sons, and 39 daughters.

As befitting of someone who is considered to be at the top of all pirates, she possesses tremendous fighting power. She has a sturdy body that is difficult to damage with ordinary strength, and can manipulate the lifespan of others using the Soru Soru no Mi.

In the Whole Cake Island arc, it was revealed that she went berserk after a mistake made by a servant and activated her “inherent Conqueror’s Haki.” This suggests that her Conqueror’s Haki is so powerful that it can be triggered unconsciously.

In battle, she can use armament Haki to harden her body and also has access to swordsmanship techniques passed down among the giant race, making her a character with tremendous firepower.

12. Eustass Kid

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Eustass Kid is a rookie who is counted among the Worst Generation, just like Luffy. At Sabaody Archipelago, he fought alongside Luffy and Trafalgar Law, leaving an impression of being one of the most powerful rookies.

While his devil fruit ability remains a mystery, there is a scene where he can be seen pulling in metal weapons, suggesting that he may have a magnetic devil fruit ability.

During the New World Arc, he challenged one of the Four Emperors, Kaido, and was defeated. While the actual battle was not shown, it was revealed by Kaido that Kid possessed conqueror’s haki.

Like Law, who formed an alliance with Luffy, Kid is a character who is expected to be portrayed in the position of a semi-protagonist in the future.

13. Kozuki Oden

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Kozuki Oden was a notorious troublemaker and daimyo of Wano Country. He developed Wano in unconventional ways, and climbed the ranks to become a daimyo of Kuri through his own efforts. He also served as the second division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates as a pirate, and ultimately traveled the seas as a crew member of the Pirate King.

It has been revealed that Oden, who fought with Roger and Whitebeard for control of the seas, was also a user of conqueror’s haki. When Luffy used conqueror’s haki in Wano Country, Ashura Doji, Oden’s former vassal, remarked, “That was Oden’s technique…!” Oden was the son of the former Wano Country Shogun Kozuki Sukiyaki and was originally the legitimate heir to the shogunate. Therefore, it is not surprising that Oden possessed the potential to use conqueror’s haki.

14. Gol D. Roger

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

The origin of the One Piece story lies in the beginning of the Great Pirate Era, where pirates were in search of the treasure left behind by the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. Roger is undoubtedly the most important character in the One Piece world.

It was widely expected by readers that Roger, who was the Pirate King and whose vice-captain Rayleigh could use Haki, would also be able to use Conqueror’s Haki. As the story neared its end, this expectation was not disappointed, and it was finally revealed that Roger was indeed a Conqueror’s Haki user.

In the novelization of the film “Film Z,” which is a theatrical release, it was explicitly stated that Roger used Conqueror’s Haki. Roger was an exception, as he was able to use Conqueror’s Haki without fail. It seems that Conqueror’s Haki is an essential quality for becoming a king.

15. Sengoku

(C)尾田栄一郎/集英社・フジテレビ・東映アニメーション

Sengoku, a former Fleet Admiral of the Navy who currently serves as the Chief of Staff, is known for his philosophy of not mixing personal feelings with work and upholding “absolute justice.” He has the ability to transform into a giant Buddha as a result of eating the “Human-Human Fruit Model: Daibutsu.” He was also shown using this ability during the Battle of Marineford to prevent Ace’s rescue.

Although Sengoku’s combat scenes are limited and his ability is rarely showcased, it was revealed in the “Vivre Card – One Piece Visual Dictionary – Starter Set Vol.2” that he is capable of using Haoshoku Haki. Sengoku has clashed with Whitebeard and Roger alongside Garp, and while the use of Haoshoku Haki is not uncommon among pirates, Sengoku is the first known user from the Navy.

16. Douglas Bullet

©尾田栄一郎/2019「ワンピース」製作委員会

Douglas Bullet, who appeared as the final boss in the 14th One Piece movie “Stampede,” is a solitary combat enthusiast who stoically aims for the title of the world’s strongest.

Originally a crew member of the Roger Pirates, he was known as the “heir to the demon” for his overwhelming strength and was sailing with the crew to surpass Roger, unlike the other crew members.

However, after Roger’s execution, Bullet lost his goal without achieving it. He then defeated all the Four Emperors and Navy officers to become the world’s strongest, with the intention of becoming the Pirate King.

Bullet can use not only Haoshoku Haki but also all forms of Haki at a high level with wide range and high density.

17. Kaido

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

In the original 1010th episode, it was revealed that conqueror’s haki, like armament haki, can also be imbued on the body. The current strongest pirate, Kaido of the Hundred Beasts, also uses this imbued conqueror’s haki.

During his first battle with Luffy, Kaido used the “Thunder Bagua” technique, which was cloaked in black lightning. This black lightning is the characteristic of an attack imbued with conqueror’s haki. When Luffy confronted Kaido on Onigashima Island, he too was shown using attacks imbued with black lightning to push Kaido into a corner.

Shanks, Big Mom, Whitebeard, and Roger, as the original Four Emperors and Pirate King, were all capable of using conqueror’s haki. Kaido is no exception, and he is capable of imbuing his attacks with conqueror’s haki as well as using it in its normal form.

18. Yamato

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Yamato is Kaido’s son (or daughter) who goes by the name of Kozuki Oden.

According to her own recollections, when she was a child, she would unconsciously use conqueror’s haki to knock out the subordinates of the Beast Pirates while rampaging.

There has been no depiction of her using conqueror’s haki as an adult, and it is unclear whether she is able to control this power.

People who may possess Haoshoku Haki

There may be characters in One Piece who can use “Haoshoku Haki” that have not yet been revealed. From here on, we will introduce characters who may be able to use Haoshoku Haki, along with the reasons why.

1. Monkey D. Dragon

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Dragon is Luffy’s father and a global criminal who leads the Revolutionary Army. His relationship with Luffy was hidden by Garp, a hero of the Navy and Luffy’s grandfather. Dragon remains a mysterious figure in the story.

Given that Ace, the son of Pirate King Roger, was able to use Haoshoku Haki, it is possible that the “potential of a king” is passed down through genetics. Therefore, it is possible that Dragon also possesses this power, just like Luffy. As the leader of the Revolutionary Army, Dragon has already demonstrated his ability to attract powerful individuals to his cause.

2. Blackbeard/Marshall D. Teach

©尾田栄一郎/集英社

Teach is the captain of the Blackbeard Pirates and one of the current Four Emperors. When Teach moves, the story takes a big turn, such as handing over Ace to the World Government and taking Whitebeard’s “Devil Fruit” ability. However, his details have not yet been revealed.

Teach is a user of the “Yami Yami no Mi” Devil Fruit. This ability allows him to pull everything into his own darkness and release it all at once. He can also nullify the abilities of other “Devil Fruit” users.

Although there is no depiction of him using Haki, he spoke to Luffy in a way that suggests he also possesses the power of Haki, saying “Your Haki has improved since last time we met.”

Moreover, since he commands the quirky prisoners of Impel Down, he is likely to have the “King’s Disposition”. He is almost certain to be able to use Conqueror’s Haki.

If the Observation Haki is honed, you can see the future, and if the Armament Haki is improved, it becomes possible to cause internal destruction. So, what kind of ability can be obtained by leveling up the Conqueror’s Haki?

Based on the portrayal of skilled users of the Conqueror’s Haki so far, it is speculated that the Conqueror’s Haki may “affect the surroundings” when honed.

The Conqueror’s Haki is a “Haki that affects people.” However, in the past, Shanks’ Haki was shown to be capable of creaking a ship and colliding with Haki to split clouds, suggesting that it also affects the surrounding matter.

And speaking of affecting the surroundings, there is the “awakening of the Paramecia-type Devil Fruit,” which was revealed in the Dressrosa arc. The trigger for the awakening of this Devil Fruit, which affects the surrounding area, could be highly honed Conqueror’s Haki.

Who will be the next to wield its power?

The adventure of Luffy and his crew aims to reach a place called “Raftel,” which only the Roger Pirates have been able to reach.

If Roger was able to use Haoshoku Haki, perhaps there is some significance in Luffy possessing the same power. It’s possible that Haoshoku Haki is an essential ability for Luffy and his crew to reach Raftel.

Furthermore, in the Dressrosa arc, Chinjao, the leader of a mafia family, stated that the true king would be decided by the battles of the conquerors and hinted that Haoshoku Haki would become even more important. It’s true that in the New World, strong characters inevitably use Haoshoku Haki.

“What is the Pirate King?” is a difficult question to answer. Perhaps “Haoshoku Haki” plays a significant role in this mystery.
