What if one day you find yourself walking alone in the dark street and you come across a corpse, lying in front of you, you smell and see the fresh blood covering the surroundings, and the scariest part of it is you hear someone… laughing? You can hear your heartbeat and feel like it’s gonna pop out of your chest, what are you going to do?

Well, if it was me, I bet I’m gonna run like crazy while screaming so loud and… damn! I hope it doesn’t happen to me! I don’t want to encounter a freakin’ sadist! Well, since we’re talking about sadists already, let me present the best sadistic anime characters who love to see the agony in someone else’s face by hurting them.

Q
Who is the most sadistic anime character?
A

One of the most sadistic anime characters is Okita Sougo from Gintama. Okita is also known as the “sadistic prince (サド王子)” for his cruelness. He loves seeing others, especially Hijikata suffer in pain.

Q
What does sadistic mean in anime?
A

Sadistic in anime often means someone who is harsh or likes teasing others. It does not necessarily mean someone who likes torturing or harming others physically.

Sougo’s most prominent trait is his sadistic nature, which was revealed as the series goes on.

A clear example of this was when he collared and chained up Urara with a metal leash for an “S&M” (sadistic & masochistic) play. Hijikata even goes as far as calling him the King of the Planet of Sadists in episode 20. Although acknowledged to be a sadist by the people who know him, including the Yorozuya, he is surprisingly obedient to his sister, Okita Mitsuba, shown in his respectful way of speaking to her and how he kneels before his sister to apologize.

Interestingly, however, in episode 35, when Sougo fell off a roller-coaster after forgetting to belt himself, he admitted in his panic that his sadism stems from being actually sensitive and weak deep down.

2. Sebastian Michaelis/Black Butler

©Yana Toboso/SQUARE ENIX,Project Atlantic

Sebastian is the Demon Butler of the Phantomhive Mansion. He’s a Butler completely dedicated to his young master Ciel Phantomhive. he executes Ciel’s orders with utmost perfection. He can get really mad with laziness and things done in the wrong way. Sebastian always has perfect manners and is polite to his young master and the other servants of the house but the truth is he just acts.

He can appear to be polite and all but, in reality, he’s a sadist, cruel and evil. All this can be seen when Ciel orders to attack or kill others. Sebastian loves sarcasm and doesn’t see anything good in anybody.

Sometimes you can even see him doing things on purpose to his young master for his own amusement. Sebastian truly embodies the sadism, making him one of our top 3 picks for this ranking.

3. Izaya Oihara/Durarara!!

Izaya Orihara is a major antagonist in the light novel and anime series Durarara!!. Izaya, without a doubt, is an extremely crafty individual. He claims that he loves the whole human race because he finds them very interesting and unpredictable.

He enjoys messing with them by manipulating situations to observe their reactions for his own pleasure. However, he dislikes Shizuo with a passion and enjoys playing with and has antagonized him since they met in high school.

He greatly enjoys pushing people to their limits and watching what happens. He does not care if people become unstable due to his influence and appears to like it even more as he loves unpredictable behaviour.

4. Esdeath/Akame ga Kill!

General Esdeath is a high-ranked general of the Empire and a legendary figure throughout the capital. Her power and ruthlessness in combat are unmatched, and her bloodlust is second to none.

Feitan is the Phantom Troupe’s interrogator and is very proficient in the art of torture. His speech usually consists of few words and poor grammar; when angered, he speaks a language of unknown origin, different from the world’s common language.

As the Troupe’s interrogator, Feitan once remarked that he felt “most sorry” for his victim, indicating that he showed some signs of sympathy. Nevertheless, he is a sadist who enjoys inflicting pain, having planned to start his torture of Gon by ripping off his fingernails. Another instance of Feitan’s sadism was his maniacal laughter and mocking directed at Zazan while she was dying.

6. Shion Sonozaki/Higurashi When They Cry

Higurashi When They Cry is considered one of the most twisted stories ever told in anime history. Though a sweet and lovely girl, at first sight, Shion transforms into a sadistic beast as the story continues.

It’s impossible to describe Shion without telling some spoilers, so you just watch the show and describe her yourself. But I swear, as When They Cry is considered the home of violence and betrayal, you’ll think Shion earns a spot on this list.

7. Accelerator/A Certain Magical Index

©SEGA ©2014 KADOKAWA アスキー・メディアワークス

Accelerator is a project, an ESPer developed to test the possibility of going beyond Level 5 and the strongest ESPer in Academy City.

According to the city’s best supercomputer, Tree Diagram, achieving ESPer Level 6 can only be possible by killing 128 Level 5 ESPers without one failure. Since there are only 7 Level 5 ESPers in Academy City including Accelerator, the plan was revised and he was dispatched to kill 20,000 Level 3 ESPers instead – the Misaka Mikoto clones.

He revels in his ability to murder each clone gruesomely. Accelerator’s sadism makes him the ideal candidate for the experiment, as he enjoys killing other people, especially the Misaka clones.

8. Elsa Granhiert/Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World

©長月達平・株式会社KADOKAWA刊/Re:ゼロから始める異世界生活2製作委員会 ©SEGA

Elsa was a battle maniac, not even hesitating to injure herself if she could fight strong opponents, which was helped by her abnormal healing rate.

This was also shown through her persistence. Due to her blessing, she claimed to be a vampire, though she didn’t drink blood or receive any ill effects when under the sun. Her favourite things were seeing colourful bowels and touching warm-looking internal organs.

Within combat, she enjoyed cleaving through the abdominal region to tear the target’s bowels out. After disembowelling Natsuki Subaru, she barraged him with a flurry of questions related to the pain he was feeling as he lay dying on the floor of the loot house, conveying that she received sadistic arousal from the pain others felt due to her actions.

9. Flare/Redo of Healer

Flare is a girl with hip-length peach-pinkish hair with bangs swept to the left. She initially had green eyes but gained blue ones after Keyaru altered her appearance.

Flare appears to be a kind, graceful and honest woman who can become very popular due to her charms and beauty. In reality, Flare is unbelievably self-centred and thinks of herself as superior to everyone.

Incredibly sadistic, she tortured Keyaru at every turn, beat him regularly and forced him to do tricks like a dog in order to get the drug she got him addicted to.

10. Alucard/Hellsing Ultimate

Alucard is violent, sadistic, and masochistic, often belittling opponents after allowing himself to be shot, torn off by them. He’s not just cruel towards vampires – he’s cruel to humans too; if Seras hadn’t stopped him, he would’ve killed both Kim and Steadler. He abhors cowards and treats his enemies extremely brutally, enjoying both inflicting pain and taunting them, especially those who can’t control themselves; all accompanied by his sarcastic humour, One such example is Leif and Jessica, to which, Alucard calls them a coward and belittles them.

11. Levi Ackerman/Attack on Titan

©諫山創・講談社/「進撃の巨人」製作委員会

Levi Ackerman, often formally referred to as Captain Levi, is the squad captain of the Special Operations Squad within the Survey Corps and is widely known as humanity’s strongest soldier.

As a result of his early childhood, Levi is described as a “clean freak” by those who know him personally as he prefers his environment and himself to be spotlessly clean. He is averse to having either himself or his equipment soiled, and has been known to wipe down his blood-smeared blades while still on the battlefield.

Despite his preoccupation with cleanliness, Levi is not very approachable. He rarely shows emotion, giving a cold impression to others. His manner of speaking tends to be very blunt, even insulting, and his comments are often coarse or inappropriate. He is not above provoking or belittling those who oppose or irritate him. His sense of humor tends toward the vulgar, insulting, and dark.

12. Junko Enoshima/Danganronpa

Junko is a young woman who took the country by storm with her extravagant tastes and cheerful charisma. Ironically, her popularity as a fashionista was due to an air of being ‘not fake’. Junko’s personality and mannerisms tend to be very erratic and unstable; she claims that her high intelligence makes her bored of even her own personality.

She is an incredibly unpredictable, psychotic, treacherous, and pitiless sadist by nature, and cares nothing more than to create despair and misery toward other people. She tends to switch unpredictably between different personalities, each more obsessed with despair than she already is.

13. Kyoya Ootori/Ouran High School Host Club

On the surface, Kyoya has it all and is it all. He’s the smooth collected, cool type. A genius and puppet master who makes all the decisions behind the scenes. Like all the members of Ouran’s Host Club, he’s also ridiculously popular and could have his pick of anyone. Kyoya was always a man who knew exactly what he wanted.

He was notorious for using others, only doing good when it benefited him. So why did he keep so close to you for seemingly no reason? Sure, he was cold, but he certainly wasn’t mean or heartless with you like he was to so many others. You were cold? He’d scoff and reprimand you before carefully placing his heavy leather coat over your shoulders. You were crying? He would tell you that you looked ugly when you cried but then he’d cuddle up close to you until you felt better.

14. Kyoya Hibari/Reborn!

(C)天野明/集英社

Hibari is aloof, cold, violent, and basically a total sadist. He abuses his position as the leader of the Disciplinary Committee and harasses others. He also finds joy in making them crumple to the ground with his trustee tonfas.

This person does whatever he pleases, however, he pleases. He’d gladly “convince you” otherwise if you have a problem with that. With the blunt force, of course.

15. Maria/Arakawa Under the Bridge

When the MC arrives at the site under the bridge, he slowly realizes that there are quite a few people living under Arakawa Bridge. This group of individuals has banded together to become a village and they are very eccentric characters.

One of these characters is the shepherd, Maria. Like Kou and Nino, Maria lives under the bridge and she is a sharp-tongued pink-haired woman who enjoys nothing more than to verbally crush the people she speaks to. Her sharp tongue is so effective, it even makes one of the other characters bleed! Overall, Maria is one of the more terrifying residents of the underside of Arakawa Bridge and Kou has a very difficult time around her as she scares him.

16. Dio Brando/Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

(C) 荒木飛呂彦/集英社・ジョジョの奇妙な冒険製作委員会

Dio Brando is a total dickbag. Dio had a mildly sympathetic backstory involving poverty, obscurity, and a terrible father. But that’s no excuse for Dio’s many horrible misdeeds, from killing Jonathan’s pet dog, Danny, to secretly poisoning George Joestar and kidnapping Erina Pendleton.

Dio showed no remorse for any of it, and he doubled down on his cruelty after becoming a vampire. He will capture, threaten, torture, use and betray anyone and everyone to get what he wants, and he always enjoys it. Dark power like this is so empowering for all the wrong reasons.

Becoming a nigh-invincible vampire did not make him any kinder as his sadistic streak grows along with his power and army of undead minions. In his many fights you can see him revelk in pure bliss in inflicting pain on his victims.

17. Hidan/NARUTO

He joined Jashin, a cult-like faith where practitioners worship the teachings of outright slaughter, murder and destruction. Hidan makes it a point of making his opponents’ deaths as painful as possible and he revels in murder and violence. He enjoys torturing his opponents, but he also tends to inflict injuries on himself too, showcasing a masochistic side to compliment his sadism.

18. Tanya Degurechaff/Tanya the Evii

©カルロ・ゼン・KADOKAWA刊/幼女戦記製作委員会

Originally a salary man murdered in 2013, he was reborn as a girl living in an alternate universe version of Europe during World War I. Thus came Tanya Degurechaff, one of anime’s notorious sadistic lolis.

On the outside, Tanya appears to be a very precocious young girl, who has been credited by many of her peers to be a model soldier in both mindset and combat prowess. But deep inside, she is a highly power-hungry, calculating, manipulative, villainous, and sadistic individual. Especially when in the battles against her enemies, she shows utter ruthlessness and bloodlust.

Tanya also strongly disapproves of failure and disobedience from her subordinates. Due to her previous life of strictly following rules, she places immense value on her orders and wartime law. She feels no comradery, and she is generally revolutionary and nihilistic unless their deaths would affect her ability to be promoted.

(C)江口夏実・講談社/「鬼灯の冷徹」第弐期製作委員会

Hozuki is the talented, sadistic deputy(and a demon god) of the King of Hell, Enma. He tries to solve various problems in Hell. In his spare time, he takes care of the animals who work in Animal Hell and raises Goldfish grass.

Hozuki seems to enjoy resorting to violent means when resolving problems, as seen when he confronts Momotaro and tells him “This is Hell so let’s settle this with violence.” Hozuki sees violence as the fastest way to deal with whatever difficulties he faces and takes delight in doing so. He is also proficient in inflicting mental anguish verbally, traumatizing Beelzebub so much after their first meeting that the prime minister of European hell vomits blood the next time he encounters Hozuki.

Hozuki is portrayed as somewhat unforgiving in nature, grinding several of his goldfish plants into juice and feeding them to Enma as punishment for their trying to escape from his garden patch.

21. Meiko Shiraki/Prison School

(C)平本アキラ・講談社/八光学園裏生徒会

Meiko Shiraki is a supporting character of Prison School. She is a third-year student in attendance at Hachimitsu Academy and the Vice-President of the Underground Student Council, a vigilante school organization. Meiko is a highly confident girl who is commonly seen around campus in a scanty outfit.

Her reputation for being a sadist and a misandrist (a person with contempt for and prejudice against men) is well known, especially to the five boys whom she physically punishes during their detention. She is often seen with a horsewhip that she uses for punishing detainees who disobey her, whereas Gakuto is regularly her victim.

22. Mariya Shidō/Maria Holic

Shizu Shidou, under the name Mariya Shidou, is the titular deuteragonist and main antagonist of Maria Holic. He is a cross-dressing boy who attends Ame no Kisaki as a girl as a means to win the chairmanship of both the all-male and all-female schools where his late grandmother served as the ex-chairman for both.

He is sadistic, cruel, creative, a dictator, manipulative, intelligent, and beautifully dangerous but a few others. When it comes to wearing a mask, Mariya wears one with excellence and ease. He has kept the entire school fooled by his gender with ease. Deep down Mariya isn’t such a bad guy after all if his willingness to bear with Kanako is any indication. Of course, he will be quick to excuse away such acts of kindness as just another facade-maintaining measure.

23. Tetsurō Kuroo/Haikyuu!!

Tetsuro Kuroo is a third-year student from Nekoma High. He is captain of the boys’ volleyball team and plays as a starting middle blocker.

Kuroo has a laid-back yet scheming personality and is considered a “provocation expert” by many. He would actively provokes others and is unrelenting when dishing out snide remarks. This is demonstrated in the way he angers Tsukishima when the first-year blocker maintained a nonchalant attitude toward volleyball during the summer training camp.

However, Kuroo is kinder and more genuine than what his exterior image conveys. He seems to derive enjoyment from facing strong opponents and hides his frustration with sharp smirks and boisterous remarks, all the while scheming strategies to break down the opposing team.

24. Donquixote Doflamingo/One Piece

Donquixote Doflamingo is a major antagonist in the One Piece franchise. He was once a Celestial Dragon. He was also once the king of Dressrosa and one of the Seven Warlords. He serves as the main antagonist of the Dressrosa Saga.

Doflamingo is extremely violent and bloodthirsty. As a child, Doflamingo was once a Celestial Dragon and he enjoyed abusing people around him and making them his slaves.

Doflamingo believes that strong individuals have power and might. He also believes that the weak have no room in the future of pirates. He looks down on those who are weak and is shown to manipulate them for his amusement and for his advantage.

25. Keigo Atobe/The Prince of Tennis

(C)許斐 剛/集英社・NAS・新テニスの王子様プロジェクト

Keigo Atobe is the captain of Hyōtei Gakuen, having defeated all of the members of the team during his first year. Atobe is severely narcissistic and arrogant, often using the quote “Be awed at the sight of my prowess!” used first after knocking out Tezuka’s racket with his drive volley.

Despite being arrogant he’s also charming and is popular between both boys and girls of his school: the girls especially tend to see him as a love interest. His sadism comes from when he plays against opponents and he never lessens his skills no matter who the opponent is. You could say he revels in watching his opponents lose.
